How to: Divorce Proof Your Marriage

Updated: Jul 13, 2025

Less than 1% of couples who pray together daily end up divorcing

The National Association of Marriage Enhancement has found that couples who pray together daily have a divorce rate of under 1%. That’s incredible! Couples who consistently pray together experience much lower divorce rates than the general population. A couple that prays together remains together! Although praying as a couple is not hard, it does require a level of vulnerability. This vulnerability can be uncomfortable for those who struggle to open up. It can also create anxiety, particularly if you are unfamiliar with prayer or do not pray regularly. I encourage you to confront your fears and advocate for your marriage through daily prayer. Find a time that aligns with both of your schedules to pray. There’s nothing better than starting your day with prayer. It sends a powerful message: Not Today Satan, to the negative influences trying to disrupt your positive vibes.

Here are 10 recommendations to kickstart your prayer life in marriage:

1. Locate a Quiet Space: Choose a comfortable and peaceful area where you can concentrate without distractions. This could be a room in your home, a park, or any place that brings you peace.

2. Start with Simplicity: You do not need to use elaborate language. Begin with simple expressions of gratitude, requests for guidance, or thoughts you want to share.

3. Be Open and Authentic: Speak from your heart. There is no right or wrong way to pray. Share your thoughts, feelings, and concerns honestly.

4. Use a Basic Structure: If it helps, you can follow a simple outline:

Adoration: Praise and acknowledge God

Confession: Reflect on any mistakes or regrets.

Thanksgiving: Express gratitude for the blessings in your life.

Supplication: Ask for help or guidance for yourself and others.

5. Listen: Prayer is not just about speaking; it is also about listening. Take a moment of silence to reflect and be open to any thoughts or feelings that come to you.

6. Set a Regular Schedule: Try to establish a routine by setting aside a specific time each day for prayer. This can help make it a meaningful part of your daily life.

7. Use Written Prayers or Scriptures: If you are unsure what to say, consider using written prayers or passages from scripture that resonate with you.

8. Pray for Others: Include prayers for friends, family, or those in need. This can help you feel connected to others and foster a sense of community.

9. Be Patient: It’s normal to feel unsure or awkward at first. Allow yourself time to grow comfortable with the practice.

10. Reflect on Your Experience: After praying, take a moment to reflect on how you feel. Keeping a journal of your thoughts can help you track your spiritual journey.
